Southern Cultures Celebrates 20 Years, 1993–2013!
We have much to celebrate at Southern Cultures—loyal readers, fine writing, a rich and inexhaustible subject—and this fall we mark 20 years of bringing the best of the South to our friends in the region and around the world.
Please join us as we celebrate our 20th anniversary throughout the 2013-14 academic year with food, music, and good friends at the Love House (and beyond!). Unless otherwise noted, all events are free and open to the public. Copies of the journal will be available for sale at the receptions.
September 17, 5:30 pm: Reception, Fall 2013 Issue—Remembering the Civil War
Featuring: Blain Roberts, Associate Professor of History, California State University, Fresno, on attending Charleston’s Secession gala & the NAACP protest of it. Read an excerpt here.
November 1, 4:00 pm: Southern Historical Association Conference, St. Louis, MO. Join us at Booth B, where UNC Press will host a gathering to celebrate our 20th with wine and cheese, and friends old and new!
December 3, 5:30 pm: Reception, Winter 2013 Issue
Featuring: John W. Coffey, Curator of American and Modern Art, NC Museum of Art, on the mysterious provenance of the bust of John C. Calhoun.
February 18, 5:30 pm: Reception, Spring 2014 Issue—The Help
Featuring: Suzanne Jones, Chair of the Department of English, University of Richmond, on the fans and foes of the controversial bestseller The Help.
April 12: 20th Anniversary celebration
